Baseball Wins First, Loses Second Versus Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - (Game 1) (Game 2) The Northwest Missouri State baseball team dropped an extra inning game in 10 innings, 4-3, before winning the nightcap 7-6. Both teams saw great defensive plays that saved runs in game two.

Northwest moves to 28-22 overall and 21-11 in the MIAA, while the Griffons move to 27-21 overall and 20-12 in MIAA action.

In game one, Northwest took a 3-2 lead with a two-out three-run home run from junior outfielder Jake Bradshaw right down the left field line.

Sophomore starter Bret Harvel cruised 5.1 innings allowing three run on seven hits and striking out five. Senior closer Brett Whittle relieved Harvel and ended up taking the loss logging 3.2 innings. Junior penmate Evan Nickell inherited the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the tenth throwing just one pitch as Reed smacked a game-winning single to right center.

Junior second baseman Stevie Bush finished game one 3-for-4 with three singles, as fellow infielder Ben Malick posted his team leading 20th multi-hit game with a 3-for-5 day at the plate.

Northwest jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in game two thanks to a three run second and a four run fourth. Five different players drove in runs in the game led by Bradshaw's 3-for-4 two RBI nightcap performance.

The Griffons battled back plating four in the fifth as Tommy Bone hit a two-out three-run home run down the right field line. The home run forced Head Coach Darin Loe to go to the bullpen relieving senior right hander Justin Hildebrand, who logged 4.2 innings in his third win. Evan Nickell recorded a seven out save, allowing just two hits.

Freshman outfielder Brandon Kirsch made a diving catch in left center field for the last out of the fifth saving a Griffon run from tying the ball game. In the home uniforms, Griffon shortstop Sam Walker made a diving stop on a ground ball up the middle and made the throw to first to save a run in the sixth that would have extended a one-run Bearcat lead.

Sophomore outfielder Chris Benham was a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored and a RBI.

The Bearcats will wrap up their regular season with a four-game set against No. 9 Central Missouri starting on Friday night, May 4, at 7 p.m. A doubleheader will follow on Saturday at 4 p.m. and a single nine on Sunday at 1 p.m.
