Northwest Baseball Splits Conference Opener with SBU

MARYVILLE, Mo. - ( Game 1) ( Game 2) The Northwest Missouri State baseball team split a doubleheader with Southwest Baptist in its conference and home opener. Northwest dropped the first game 3-2, a seven inning affair, and won the nightcap 11-10 in nine innings.

Northwest moves to 8-10 overall (1-1 MIAA), while the split brings Baptist's record to 8-9 (1-1 MIAA).

In game one, the Bearcats took an early lead scoring an unearned run in the bottom half of the second. Sophomore outfielder Chris Benham's single drove in junior Todd Schonhoff, who reached on an error. Baptist knotted the game in the fourth on an RBI single.

Schonhoff's squeeze bunt in the sixth gave Northwest a 2-1 lead needing just three outs for the victory. A sac fly in the seventh, after three consecutive hits, and two-out RBI single gave SBU a 3-2 win.

Sophomore Bret Harvel allowed just one run on six hits, but Brett Whittle took the loss attempting to save the game in the seventh. For SBU, Montgomery gained the complete game win.

The Bearcats bats exploded in game two platted 11 runs thanks to four Northwest home runs. Sophomore third baseman Ben Malick, junior Todd Schonhoff, seniors John White and Ryley Westman all homered.

Northwest scored in all but three innings and smacked 15 hits.

Danny Malone picked up his third victory of the season, now 3-1, and Brett Whittle gained his first save of the season.

Northwest will be back in action tomorrow against SBU in Maryville. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for noon. Game one will be seven innings, followed by a nine inning game.

NOTES: Junior first baseman Britt Westman has started 125 straight games … Senior shortstop John White has started 85 straight games … Sophomore third baseman Ben Malick has started 32 straight games … Senior catcher Ryley Westman has started 31 straight games … Senior Brett Whittle's save gives him 10 all-time, five behind the all-time leader.
