Another Ranked Opponent Downs Bearcat Baseball 5-3

MONTEVALLO, Ala.- (stats) The Northwest Missouri State baseball team lost its fifth straight to No. 18 University of Montevallo 5-3. The Northwest bats notched just two hits in the first five innings, but did score one run on an RBI-double by sophomore Ben Malick in the third.

The loss drops Northwest to 3-6 overall and moves Montevallo to 13-5.

The Falcons tied it at one in the fourth on a solo home run by Travis Fultz. They gained the lead in the sixth on an infield single by Jeffery Reach and added another two runs in the seventh.

Falcons starter Nate Russ retired nine straight batters before junior Jake Bradshaw singled in the sixth.

Northwest scored two in the eighth with two outs and nobody on base. A single by junior transfer Drew DeMott started the rally and was followed by a double by freshman Nick Pfeiffer. After a wild pitch that scored DeMott, Malick drove in his second RBI of the game platting Pfeiffer and getting the Bearcats within one at 3-4. Malick finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.

Another solo home run by Travis Fultz extended a one run lead leading 5-3 going into the ninth. Northwest failed to rally in the ninth going down in order.

Bill Disselhoff took the loss for Northwest, his first of the season. He logged 5.1 innings striking out four and allowing two runs on six hits. Four Bearcat relievers pitched the last 2.2 innings. Nate Russ struck out eight in 7.2 innings and notched his second win of the season. Zach Andrews notched the save, his third of the season closing out the game for the Falcons.

Northwest will end its spring trip tomorrow with one nine-inning game at 1 p.m. against Montevallo.

NOTES: The 3-4-5 hitters were 0-for-12 in the game for Northwest … John White started his 76 straight game … Britt Westman started his 116 straight game … Ryley Westman ends his nine game hit streak … Disselhoff starts his first career game at Northwest … It is the fifth straight loss for Northwest.
