Bearcats Strand 14 Runners in 2-1 Loss to No. 14 West FloridaPENSACOLA, Fla. - (stats) The Northwest Missouri State baseball team dropped its opening-game series with No. 14 West Florida 2-1. The Bearcats struggled to take advantage of opportunities leaving 14 runners on base in the nine-inning contest.
Both team's bats were silent combining for just seven total hits, four from the Bearcats and three from the Argonauts.
The loss drops Northwest to 3-2 (0-0 MIAA) and gives West Florida a 13-4 overall record.
The Argonauts hit the scoreboard first plating one run in the second-inning on a fielder's choice by junior Lee Huggins. West Florida never hit the ball out of the infield in the production of its first run. Two Bearcat errors aided West Florida to its second and final run in the fourth.
The Bearcats went hitless for the first 4.2 innings until freshman second baseman Nick Pfeiffer slapped a single to right, his first career hit, with two outs.
Three consecutive walks to start the sixth loaded the bases for the Bearcats, sparking a possible Bearcat rally. Unfortunately, the rally was followed by three consecutive strike outs by starter Jordan Berry, who logged seven innings in the win.
Northwest struck in the seventh on a two-out RBI-double by junior first baseman Britt Westman. The run was unearned after Pfeiffer reached on an error.
The Bearcats had the tying run on second with one out in the ninth after a Britt Westman double, but a pop-out and line-out ended a possible Northwest comeback. Britt collected two of the Bearcats four total hits ending 2-for-3 with two doubles, while Pfeiffer and Ryley Westman each were 1-for-4.
Northwest starter sophomore Danny Malone logged six innings allowing three hits and two runs, just one earned, in the loss. Argonauts starter senior Jordan Berry moves to 1-1 after the win.
Evan Nickell relieved starter Malone making his third appearance of the year. He struck out two and did not allow a hit in two innings.
The Bearcat baseball team will be back in action tomorrow at 4 p.m. with another nine-inning contest against West Florida.
