Ryley Westman Volunteers With "Reading With the Rebels"
NEW MARKET, Iowa -- Northwest Missouri State senior catcher Ryley Westman (Smithville, Mo.) participated in the New Market (Iowa) Rebels annual "Reading With the Rebels" event, held earlier this summer. Westman volunteered with the program as part of the Rebels' continuing effort to give back to the local community. The event included players from Southwest Baptist University and Wilmington College (Del.). Westman was a catcher with New Market for the summer of 2006
"Reading With the Rebels" is an event that allows children from New Market and the surrounding communities to spend a day with the Rebels baseball players reading their favorite books. Participating children are stressed the importance of literacy while reading aloud in groups with Rebels baseball players. Two coaches and 11 athletes took part in the event.
The New Market Rebels are one of 10 members in the Valley Baseball League, a league that is wooden-bat National Alliance of Summer College Baseball and major league sanctioned. The Rebels ended the regular season first in the North Division standings with a record of 32-10. New Market lost in the semifinals of the league's postseason tournament.
