Coons, White & Whittle Earn NCBWA Second-Team All-Region Accolades

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Northwest Missouri State senior Matt Coons (Dearborn, Mo.), junior John White (Omaha, Neb.) and junior Brett Whittle (Wichita, Kan.) were Northwest representatives on the 2006 National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA) All-Central Region Second Team, announced today. Coons was one of three outfielders chosen while White shared Second Team honors with Reggie Stevens of Winona State and Whittle was the lone relief pitcher.

A 2006 All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) First Team performer, Coons ranked 46th in the NCAA Division II statistics with a .415 batting average. In the MIAA, he was sixth in runs/game (1.05), eighth in home runs/game (.17) and total bases/game (2.22). For the week of April 24-30, Coon was the MIAA Hitter of the Week as he went 7-for-10 (.700) with three doubles, a home run, four RBIs and six runs scored. Overall on the year, Coons totaled 42 runs, 12 doubles, 26 RBIs and seven homers.

In league stats, White was third in runs/game (1.12), sixth in doubles/game (.35), 10th in hits/game (1.37) and stolen bases/game (.27). He was named to the 2006 All-MIAA Second Team after batting .354 (67-for-189) with 55 runs scored, 31 RBIs, 17 doubles, which tied for the team lead, and a team-high 24 walks.

In his first season as a Bearcat after transferring from Independence (Kan.) Community College, Whittle was tops in the league and 21st in the country with nine saves in 20 appearances. He went 2-2 overall with a 5.64 earned run average. In 22 1/3 innings pitched, Whittle struck out 13 and walked five. As a relief pitcher, he earned All-MIAA Second Team honors.

Both Coons and White were chosen on the 2006 American Baseball Coaches Association / Rawlings All-Central Region Second Team back on May 23.

Northwest finished its season with a 26-23 record having won 14 of its last 16 games including three of four to end the season from Central Region participant Central Missouri State.
