Coons and White Earn ABCA Second-Team All-Region Honors; 10 Bearcats Make MIAA Academic Honor Roll

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Northwest Missouri State senior Matt Coons (Dearborn, Mo.) and junior John White (Omaha, Neb.) have been selected to the 2006 American Baseball Coaches Association / Rawlings All-Central Region Second Team, announced today. Also, 10 Northwest baseball student-athletes were recognized on the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll: senior Alex Budden (Granville, Iowa), senior Billy Burns (St. Joseph, Mo.), junior Justin Hildebrand (St. Joseph, Mo.), senior Mark Lewis (Maryville, Mo.), senior Tristan Stewart (Crystal Lake, Ill.), sophomore Britt Westman (Smithville, Mo.), junior Ryley Westman (Smithville, Mo.), sophomoreZach Weston (New Franklin, Mo.), White and senior Pat Whitt (Springfield, Mo.).

"We are certainly going to miss Coons as he was our big bat in the middle of the lineup," said head coach Darin Loe. "Offensively, he had great numbers and he will be tough to replace. We are fortunate to have White back for his senior season. He was a captain as a junior and he was our offensive key at the leadoff position in the lineup. He was a big reason for us winning some key games down the stretch."

A 2006 All-MIAA First Team performer, Coons ranked 46th in the NCAA Division II statistics with a .415 batting average. In the MIAA, he was sixth in runs/game (1.05), eighth in home runs/game (.17) and total bases/game (2.22). For the week of April 24-30, Coon was the MIAA Hitter of the Week as he went 7-for-10 (.700) with three doubles, a home run, four RBIs and six runs scored. Overall on the year, Coons totaled 42 runs, 12 doubles, 26 RBIs and seven homers.

In league stats, White was third in runs/game (1.12), sixth in doubles/game (.35), 10th in hits/game (1.37) and stolen bases/game (.27). He was named to the 2006 All-MIAA Second Team after batting .354 (67-for-189) with 55 runs scored, 31 RBIs, 17 doubles, which tied for the team lead, and a team-high 24 walks.

Northwest finished its season with a 26-23 record having won 14 of its last 16 games.
