Bearcats Extend Winning Streak to 11 Before Falling in Game 2; Coons Named MIAA Player of the Week
MARYVILLE, Mo. - (Game One) (Game Two) Northwest Missouri State baseball extended its winning streak to 11 straight with the 3-0 win in the front end of a doubleheader with Washburn this afternoon at Bearcat Field. The win handed Northwest head coach Darin Loe his 200th at Northwest. But, the Ichabods came back in the nightcap taking an 8-1 lead before holding for the 8-6 win.
Northwest stands 23-22 overall and 12-13 in the MIAA while Washburn sits at 27-20 and 15-9 in the league after the split.
The first-game belonged to junior right-handed starter Brian Lamers. He went the distance (7 innings) as he scattered five hits and struck out eight Ichabods. This complete game shut out came on the heels of a 14-0 complete game victory last Friday over Southwest Baptist for the Riverside, Calif., native.
Northwest tallied the eventual game-winner thanks to a steal of home from senior John White. White walked to lead off the bottom of the first and advanced to third on a wild pitch and single. With senior Will Newland standing on first, White stole home as Newland was picked off of first base.
The Bearcats picked up one run in the third on a White RBI ground-out and one more in the fifth on White's fifth home run of the season to right field. White finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Junior Tristan Stewart went 2-for-3 in the game.
In Game 2, WU exploded for six runs in the first three innings thanks to four Bearcat errors. Northwest made the game interesting plating five in the eighth before running out of gas. Down 8-1 in the eighth, Northwest strung together five straight singles to start the inning as three runners scored. However, with two on and two outs, pitcher Brian Dales induced the inning-ending ground ball to escape the jam.
Bearcat hurler Mark Lewis was hit with the loss going just 2-plus innings and allowing six runs (one earned) on five hits. At the dish, senior Pat Whitt collected three hits in four plate appearances. Freshman Ben Malick was 2-for-4 while five other Bearcats posted one hit apiece including freshly named MIAA Player of the Week Matt Coons.
Northwest now will get ready to host #7 Central Missouri State this weekend in a four-game set. The Bearcats host CMSU on Friday at 3 p.m. in a single 9-inning game.
NOTES: Matt Coons became the second Bearcat this year to be honored by the MIAA - Josh Norris picked up Pitcher of the Week laurels back on April 18 ... Coons batted 7-for-10 last week with four RBIs and six runs scored ... Head coach Darin Loe holds a 200-173 record at Northwest.
