Bearcats pickup sweep of Peacocks

MARYVILLE, Mo . -- A single from Ryley Westman gave the Bearcats their sixth straight win Sunday afternoon in an extra inning win over Upper Iowa 9-8.

The Bearcats (19-21, 9-12 MIAA) defeated the Peacocks 5-4 in Game 2.

In Game 1, Billy Burns scored off of Westman's single in the come-from-behind win. Burn's run was the second of the inning. The comeback got started when Britt Westman reached after being hit by a Joey Witte pitch. Westman advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Coons and scored on a error by second baseman Jamie Terres that also allowed Burns to reach.

Northwest fell behind early in the game, when starter Matt Kelley gave up five runs in the top of the first inning. The Bearcats scored a run of their own in the bottom of the first when John White reached third on a three-base error. White scored on the next at-bat on a Will Newland sacrifice fly.

The Bearcats came back and tied it in the bottom of the fifth when they scored three runs in the bottom of the third and another in their half of the fourth.

In extra innings, Upper Iowa scored a run in their half of the ninth to take a 9-8 lead. Cody Sinclair came in and threw a scoreless inning in relief of Brett Whittle, improving his record to 2-0.
Witte picked up the loss, dropping his record to 2-1.
In Game 2, Northwest fell behind again early 1-0 after the top of the second inning.

The Bearcats scored three in the bottom half, however to give them a 3-1 lead.
Burns knocked in Pat Whitt and Ben Malick, after both reached on walks.
In the bottom of the third, B. Westman hit his eighth homer of the year, blasting a Matt Loewe fast ball onto College Park Drive.

A pair of hits by the Peacocks in the top of the fifth led to a 4-4 tie.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ryley Westman came through again with another hit, knocking in Malick who reached on a double.

Lane McKay picked up his first win of the season, while Whittle earned his seventh save.

The Bearcats are back in action Wednesday afternoon against Truman State for an MIAA doubleheader. First pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
