Ichabods too much for Bearcat baseball

TOPEKA, Kan . -The Northwest baseball team dropped a pair of MIAA contests today against Washburn.

Northwest (12-19) led in game 1 6-0 before dropping the game 9-8. In game 2, the Bearcats fell 8-6.
Northwest gave up six runs over the sixth and seventh innings in game 1 and saw their lead evaporate. The Ichabods used nine hits to score their six runs during the rally.

The Bearcats rallied back to take a 8-6 lead in the eighth. Tristan Stewart doubled down the left field line and then John White tripled, scoring Stewart. White scored during the next at-bat when Will Newland reached on an error by the shortstop.

Washburn scored two runs of their own in the eighth to tie the game at 8-8 and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Michael Hammersmith's leadoff walk eventually turned into the winning run, after he scored on a double by Tyler Blankenship.

Northwest led 2-0 early, when White and Newland both scored. White led the Bearcats with four hits and five RBIs in the first contest.

Lane McKay picked up the loss for the Bearcats dropping his record to 0-1.
Three Bearcats relievers appeared in the last 2.1 innings, giving up six runs, to overshadow Mark Lewis' outing. Lewis threw six innings allowing eight hits and three runs.

In game 2, it was Washburn that jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Northwest battled back in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game 2-2. The Bearcats picked up a run in the fourth when Matt Coons homered to left field and in the fifth when Ryley Westman homered down the left field line.
Washburn scored six runs in the fifth to take the eventual game-winning lead. Washburn had six runs on five hits and four errors in the inning.

Defensively, Northwest finished the game with five errors.

The Bearcats mounted a comeback in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs, but the rally ended with Westman on third and Billy Burns on second.

Justin Hildebrand picked up the loss, dropping his record to 0-4.

The Bearcats are back in action Friday and Saturday taking on Pittsburg State in a pair of doubleheaders. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. Friday.
