Westman, Newland pace Bearcats in 18-10 win
JOPLIN, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State (12-17, 6-8 MIAA) had its biggest offensive output of the season beating Missouri Southern (7-25, 2-10 MIAA) 18-10 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action this afternoon.
Britt Westman and Will Newland each had big days at the plate. Westman had two homeruns, while Newland had five RBIs and was just a double shy of the cycle. Six different Bearcats had multi-hit games.
John White continued his strong weekend, the shortstop had four hits including a pair of doubles.
As a team, Northwest had 23 hits and sent 51 batters to the plate.
The Bearcats led throughout the contest, scoring three runs in the top of the first and eight in their half of the third.
The last time the Bearcats participated in a game with at least 28 runs scored was when they defeated Pittsburg State 18-10 on April 16, 2005.
Zach Weston picked up the win for the Bearcats, his first of the season. The sophomore threw 3.2 innings, giving up four earned runs.
The Bearcats are back in action Tuesday when they travel to Topeka, Kan. to face off against Washburn. The double header is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
