Bearcats earn MIAA win over Southern
JOPLIN, Mo. - The Northwest baseball team got off to a fast start Friday night, on their way to defeating Missouri Southern 14-7.
The Bearcats were led offensively by Will Newland who homered in the third and fourth innings and knocked in four RBIs. As a team Northwest scored in every inning except the first and the eighth.
Britt Westman tripled and homered for the Bearcats. Newland and John White each scored three times for the Bearcats.
Northwest (10-16, 4-7 MIAA) led by 11 runs in the seventh, before Southern began to claw back. Southern scored four runs in the seventh, to close the gap to 13-7, but they would not get any closer.
Brian Lamers picked up his fourth win of the season to improve his record to 4-3 on the season. Brett Whittle came on in the eighth inning to pick up the save.
Lamers went seven innings allowing 13 hits and six runs.
Northwest is back in action again tomorrow against Southern for a pair of seven inning contests. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
QUICK HITTERS: The Bearcats' 14 runs was their second highest offensive output of the season second only to the 15 runs they scored against Peru State on March 15...Missouri Southern leads the all-time series 16-27...Northwest has won six of the last eight meetings between the teams...All but one batter reached base Friday night.
