Bearcats swept by Mavericks

OMAHA, Neb. - The Northwest Missouri State baseball team was swept Saturday by the University of Nebraska-Omaha. The Bearcats dropped the first contest 8-7, before dropping Game 2, 7-4.

In the first contest, the Bearcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead when shortstop John White (Omaha, Neb.) hit a two-out solo homerun. The Mavericks answered back and scored three runs over the next four innings to lead 3-1 heading into the fifth inning.

The Bearcats then scored four runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead. Matt Coons (Dearborn, Mo.) got the rally started when he doubled. Two runs and two walks later, the Bearcats scored Coons, Pat Whitt (Springfield, Mo.), Ryley Westman (Smithville, Mo.) and Manny Davila (Douglas, Ariz.).

The Mavericks then scored five more runs. Northwest tried to mount a comeback in the seventh, but the rally fell a run short. The Bearcats had the tying run on second with one out, but a flyout and groundout ended the contest.

Brian Lamers (Riverside, Calif.) picked up the loss to drop his record to 3-3.

In Game 2 the Bearcats fell behind 7-0, before putting up a run in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh. Coons and Pat Whitt (Springfield, Mo.) each had two hits in the contest.

Pitcher Josh Norris (Chillicothe, Mo.) was given the loss after surrendering all seven runs in three innings. Zach Weston (New Franklin, Mo.) offered three innings of scoreless relief.

The Bearcats are back in action Sunday against Truman State in Kirksville. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. Coaches have announced that there could be changes however due to the chance of rain in the area.
