Bearcat Baseball Snaps 5-game Skid

MARYVILLE, Mo. - (Game One) (Game Two) The Northwest Missouri State baseball team snapped its 5-game losing streak this afternoon, defeating Missouri Western 4-2 in the first game of the rivals' doubleheader. MWSU came back in Game 2 taking a 5-4 decision.

Northwest scored all four of its runs in the second inning in the first game.

The rally started when a single by Billy Burns (St. Joseph, Mo.) knocked in three runs. Burns' single scooted under the glove of right fielder Kellen Hobin. The error scored Sergio Davila (Douglas, Ariz.), Michael Younghanz (Kansas City, Mo.) and Ryley Westman (Smithville, Mo.).
Burns later scored on a foul ball hit by Pat Whitt (Springfield, Mo.).

Mark Lewis (Maryville, Mo.) threw 5.2 innings and picked up his first win of the year. Closer Brett Whittle (Wichita, Kan.) picked up his third save of the year.

Western got its first run from Willie Forest. Their second run was scored by Brian Munson when he was knocked in by Adrian Mercado.

In game 2, the Bearcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Whitt scored on a single by Davila. Davila had three runs batted in the second game.

Western answered in the top of the second inning with two runs, off three singles.

The Griffons scored two more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. The Bearcats rallied back in the bottom of the fifth and scored three runs to tie the game 4-4.

Westman got the rally started and then Davila knocked in Manny Davila (Douglas, Ariz.) and Whitt.
Western tacked a run on in the seventh to take the 5-4 win.

Justin Hildebrand (St. Joseph, Mo.) pitched six innings and gave up all five runs, leaving after facing a batter in the seventh.

Sophomore Zach Weston (New Franklin, Mo.) came on in relief and threw three scoreless innings.
Northwest now travels to Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday with first pitch slated for 12 p.m. Two seven-inning games are scheduled.
