Northwest Splits St. Patrick's Day Double Header
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State baseball team split a the double header this afternoon against Wayne State College, with the Bearcats pulling out the 8-4 game one win, while dropping game two, 10-0.
In game one, junior pitcher Brian Lamers (Riverside, Calif.) pitched well for his third win of the season (3-1). He went 5.2 innings, allowed 12 hits, four runs, three earned, struck out two and picked off a batter.
Junior Brett Whittle (Wichita, Kan.) earned his second save of the season, while pitching 1.1 innings, not allowing a hit and only allowing one base runner after he hit Vicente Cafaro.
Offensively for the Bearcats, they were led by four batters all of whom picked up a pair of hits. Sophomore Britt Westman (Smithville, Mo.), who had three RBIs, while junior Sergio Davila (Douglas, Ariz.) had two RBIs to lead Northwest. Davila now leads Northwest with 19 RBIs on the year.
In game two, Wayne State jumped on the board early with four runs in the first and again scored two in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Senior Travis Fouts (Peck, Ida.) took the loss and falls to 0-3, after giving up three hits, six runs, five earned, four strike outs, walking two in 4.2 innings.
The Bearcat defense did not help the pitchers as they committed four errors, while only six of the 10 Wayne State runs were earned. The Northwest offense also could not anything started as they could only collect two hits.
After the double header with Wayne State, Northwest now goes to 6-7, while the Wildcats go to 10-8. With the weather possibly threatening Maryville this weekend, the rest of the series with Wayne State has been cancelled. The Bearcats next action will be Wednesday, against Washburn at noon for a double header.
