Northwest Wins Home Opener Over Rockhurst

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State baseball team scored five runs in the first two innings to help in the 9-4 win over Rockhurst this afternoon.

The Bearcats got things started off in the first inning with three runs that were helped out with a pair of errors by Rockhurst. Senior John White (Omaha, Neb.) scored the first Northwest run on an error by Hawks catcher Andrew Freize, who was trying to throw out senior Will Newland (Ottawa, Kan.) attempting to steal second. Junior Sergio Davila (Douglas, Ariz.) knocked in Newland, while senior Billy Burns (St. Joseph, Mo.) helped plate Davila.

Northwest would score two in the second and one in the fourth, before the Rockhurst plated four in the fifth to make it a 6-4 game. Rockhurst center fielder Zach Trolio hit a three run home run, and Steve Bruce had the other RBI for the Hawks.

Also in the fifth inning, junior Justin Hildebrand (St. Joseph, Mo.) was knocked out of the game and did not pick up the decision, after going 4.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, four runs, all earned and striking out two. Junior reliever Josh Norris (Chillicothe, Mo.) picked up his first win in a Bearcat uniform, pitching the final 4.1 innings, giving up only one hit and sitting down one.

Leading the way for Northwest was Newland and junior Tristan Stewart (Crystal Lake, Ill.), who went 3-for-5. Stewart also picked up a season-high four RBIs and hit his first home run of the season, while White hit second long ball of the year.

The Bearcats now improve to 3-5 on the year, while Rockhurst falls to 7-5. The next action for Northwest is Saturday, when they host Nebraska-Omaha for a double header first pitch is set for noon.
