Bearcats Split with Washburn, Set Northwest Records
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State split with Washburn today while setting two Northwest season records. The Ichabods won the first game, 6-5 in extra innings but the Bearcats came back and won the second game easily, 15-6. The 'Cats surpassed the season hits record set in 2002 (534) today with 26 hits totaling 547 on the season. They also broke the season RBI record set in 1989 (353) with 20 today bringing this year's tally to 359. Northwest is now 33-19 overall and 20-7 in MIAA action while Washburn fell to 21-29 overall and 8-20 in conference action.
The Bearcats tied up game one in the bottom of the seventh inning at three runs each to push the game into extra innings. Both teams scored two more runs in the eighth but the 'Cats couldn't answer back after the Ichabods scored one more in the top of the ninth.
The Bearcats were held to only eight hits in game one while Washburn had 10. Both teams had two errors. Hammersmith was 4-for-4 for the Ichabods including a homerun and five of the team's six RBI. Britt Westman had two hits for the 'Cats and John White batted in two runs.
Travis Fouts started on the mound for the 'Cats in game one and pitched 4.1 innings, striking out four batters. Mark Lewis came in for 3.2 innings of relief and took the loss for the Bearcats. Jeremy Tapps closed out the game.
It seemed as if the Bearcats took over the second game from the start as they stretched out to a 6-1 lead after three innings, but Jared Head tied the game with a grand slam in the top of the fourth. Northwest kept the bats hot as they scored another run in the bottom of the fourth then three more in the fifth, unanswered. Ryley Westman cleared the bases in the sixth with a grand slam which he added to his two other hits and three other RBI (seven total). Four other Bearcats had three hits each in game two: Tristan Stewart, Britt Westman, Matt Coons and Seth Evans.
Justin Hildebrand pitched the complete second game (2-2) and took the win as he allowed only two earned runs.
Northwest will finish regular season play at Central Missouri State this weekend (May 6-7). The 'Cats will need to sweep the Mules for a chance at the MIAA regular season title. The game on Fri. will begin at 7:00 p.m. and the doubleheader on Sat. will be at 4:00 p.m.
