Bearcats Blast 33 Hits to Defeat SBU Twice
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State came back to win both games today versus Southwest Baptist after falling to the SBU Bearcats yesterday. Northwest edged by Southwest Baptist in the first game, 5-4 then battled even further and defeated SBU 16-6 in eight innings due to the ten-run rule. The 'Cats are now 32-18 overall and 19-6 in the MIAA. SBU fell to 24-21 and 12-13 in conference play.
All Northwest batters got at least one hit today as the 'Cats had 33 between both games. John White was perfect on the day going 1-for-1 officially in game one with two sac bunts and 5-for-5 in game two with a double and four singles. Senior Drew Mettille and sophomore Ryley Westman had five hits each in the doubleheader and senior Kyle Gallagher hit his 12th homerun on the season during the first rally. Matt Coons pitched the complete first game taking his fifth win this year (5-2). He struck out 13 batters (his career high) and walked only two.
In game two, Coons was a triple away from the cycle and Britt Westman was a homerun away from it. Zach Weston started on the mound in game two but Jeremy Tapps (3-1) pitched the last 3.2 innings and recorded the win.
The SBU Bearcats struggled at the plate as none of their batters had multiple hits in either game.
Northwest will play its last regular season home games on Tues., May 3 at 1:00 p.m. versus Washburn. The doubleheader is a make-up from a rain-out earlier this season.
