Missouri Southern Ends Northwest's Win Streak
MARYVILLE, Mo. - No. 27 Northwest Missouri State lost for the first time in two weeks (10 games) today as Missouri Southern swept the Bearcats in the doubleheader that brought Northwest to 21-14 overall and 8-3 in MIAA action. Missouri Southern improved to 15-19 overall and an even 6-6 in the conference. The Lions shutout the 'Cats in the first game, 2-0 then won the second game, 4-2.
Jeff Taylor took the win for the Lions in game one, pitching a one-hitter (Matt Coons-triple) shutout. Taylor did not strike out any Bearcats and walked three. Evan Bates pitched the last inning for the save. Brett Bognar suffered the loss for the Bearcats (4-2). He struck out four batters and allowed two runs (one earned). Bognar's ERA improved to 2.98 for 42.1 innings pitched.
The 'Cats faired better on offense during the second game, scoring one run each in the first and fourth inning. The Lions scored two runs in the fifth and one each int he seventh and ninth to close out the game, 4-2 with 10 hits and two errors. The Bearcats had five hits and two errors as well.
Daniel Richhart pitched a complete game for the Lions' win, striking out one batter and walking one. Zach Weston started for Northwest and pitched 4.2 innings before giving the reigns to Mark Lewis who tallied the loss (1-1).
Northwest's Matt Coons had two triples on the day. Mike Baso and Kyle Knight had three hits each for the Lions.
Northwest will continue tomorrow versus Missouri Southern at home. There will be one nine-inning game on Sun., Apr. 10 (1:00 p.m.).
