No. 27 Northwest Defeated No. 28 Emporia, 8-5
MARYVILLE, Mo. - No. 27 Northwest Missouri State defeated No. 28 Emporia State today in the first game of the scheduled doubleheader, 8-5. The second game was called in the bottom of the second inning on account of rain. That game will be picked up at the end of the season if needed. The score was 6-4 with the Bearcats leading.
The Bearcats improved to 21-12 overall and 8-1 in MIAA competition with their tenth consecutive win. The Hornets fell to 23-8 and 4-3 in conference play.
The 'Cats took the initiative and scored the first run in the top of the fourth inning. A single by Drew Mettille and a double by Kyle Gallagher moved runners around to score three runs. Their bats heated up in the fifth inning started off by a hit through the left side by Will Newland. Mettille singled also, moving Newland to third. Britt Westman hit a timely double, scoring Newland and moving Mettille to third. Matt Coons reached base on balls which loaded the bases for Gallagher's homerun to left field. The grand slam was Gallagher's first on the season and seventh homerun on the year.
Northwest had 11 hits in the first game including three by Mettille (.405 for the season) and two each by Newland and Gallagher. Gallagher batted in six runs bringing his season total to 33 RBI.
Travis Fouts (4-0) took the win for the 'Cats. He pitched five innings, striking out seven batters and walking five. Justin Hildebrand and Mark Lewis pitched in relief for Northwest.
The Bearcats played two innings of the second game which will count if the teams have to play the entirety of the game later in the season due to a tie.
Northwest will continue conference play this weekend (Apr. 9-10) versus Missouri Southern at home. There will be a nine and seven inning game scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. on Sat. and one nine-inning game on Sun. (1:00 p.m.).
