Bearcats Shut Out No. 14 Emporia State in Doubleheader

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State shut out No. 14 Emporia State in the Hornets' conference opening doubleheader. The 'Cats won the first game, 3-0 and the second game, 11-0. They improve to 13-12 overall and 3-1 in league play while ESU dropped to 19-7 and 0-2 in the MIAA.

Northwest had two pitchers throw complete games on the day. Brett Bognar was on the mound in game one. He improved his record to 3-1, striking out eight and walking only one. Matt Coons pitched the second game and gave up only two hits. Coons (1-2) struck out 10 Hornets and walked none.

The Bearcats had a solid day on offense with 22 hits, as well as on defense with only one error (game 2). Shortstop John White had back-to-back doubles in the first game for the 'Cats. Will Newland and Seth Evans joined White in the two-hit club for game one.

Senior Drew Mettille homered in the first inning (scoring two) of game two to set the pace for the rest of the contest. The Bearcats garnered four runs off of five hits in the fourth inning to push them up, 7-0. Kyle Gallagher hit a long ball over the right field fence to lead off the fifth inning. Will Newland's homerun went opposite field of Gallagher's and scored Seth Evans from first, 10-0. A double by Gallagher and a Hornet error scored one more for the 'Cats as they won, 11-0.

Mettille, Westman and Newland had three hits each in the second game for the Bearcats. Newland was 5-for-8 at the plate today and Mettille batted in four runs.

Northwest will take a break from conference action on Mon., Mar. 28 to play Peru State College in a home doubleheader scheduled for noon.
