Bearcats Split with Mo. Western to Open League Play
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State won its conference opener today versus Missouri Western State at Bearcat Field, 10-9. The Griffons won the second game of the doubleheader, 4-1 bringing both MIAA teams to 1-1 in conference play. The 'Cats improved to 11-12 while Missouri Western went to 13-11 overall.
Northwest scored in three of the first four innings pushing ahead of the Griffons, 8-1. Missouri Western answered back with four runs in the sixth inning and then four more in the seventh, tying the game at nine. The Bearcats had loaded the bases with one out when John White bunted a perfect single up the third base line which scored Drew Mettille from third for the 10-9 win over Missouri Western.
Travis Fouts started on the mound for the 'Cats giving up five runs (all earned) and striking out four. Justin Hildebrand followed in relief, as did Lane McKay who claimed the win (2-1). McKay pitched two innings, gave up one run and struck out one batter.
Britt Westman, Matt Coons and John White had three hits each in game one in three, four and five at-bats respectively. Ryley Westman batted in a game high three runs for the 'Cats.
The Griffons turned the tables in game two as they went ahead by three runs (4-1) in the fourth inning and kept that lead for the rest of the game. Spellmeyer pitched the entire game for Missouri Western and took the win. Northwest's J.R. Servatius pitched one out over half the game and tallied his first loss (0-1). Mark Lewis pitched 3.1 innings in relief.
Four Northwest players had one hit each in game two including freshman Britt Westman who went 4-for-5 on the day.
Northwest will continue league play tomorrow (Sat., Mar. 26) as it will face No. 14 Emporia State in a noon doubleheader.
