Bearcats Claimed Two from UNO
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State redeemed itself today after a split with Nebraska-Omaha last weekend. The Bearcats came out on top of the Mavericks today, 9-7 and 6-4. The 'Cats have been fighting to improve their record and have gone from 4-9 to 10-11 overall.
The 'Cats took the lead early in game one, scoring seven in the first two innings. All but one of the Bearcats' batters had at least one hit in the first game. Will Newland, Pat Whitt, Seth Evans and Kyle Gallagher had two hits each. Gallagher and Drew Mettille had a triple each, both in the first three innings.
Jacob Taylor took the win for Northwest. He pitched 3.1 innings, striking out one and allowing seven runs (all earned). Lane McKay pitched the last inning and took his first save on the season.
The Mavericks took the lead in the second game with four hits, driving in three runs in the top of the third. The 'Cats answered back in the fourth with three runs brought in by a double by Newland and four timely walks giving the Bearcats a 5-3 lead. UNO gained one more run in the sixth inning on two singles. Northwest answered back with a run on two hits by Evans and Mettille bringing the 'Cats up by two at 6-4.
Travis Fouts pitched 5.1 innings for the Bearcats and claimed his third win. He struck out seven batters and allowed only four earned runs. McKay picked up his second save on the day and season.
Northwest will begin conference play on Tues., Mar. 22 at 3:00 p.m. at Washburn.
