Northwest Drops Twinbill at Northeastern (Okla.)
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Northwest Missouri State baseball scored in the final six innings including a batch of seven in the fifth and sixth frames, but Northeastern (Okla.) State plated two in the bottom of the 10th frame to post a 12-11 victory in Game 1 this afternoon at Rousey Field. The Redmen used the momentum to gain a 10-1 victory in the seven-inning night cap and went 2-1 against the Bearcats over the weekend.
Northwest falls to 1-2 overall while Northeastern improves to 3-2 on the 2005 season.
In the first game, sophomore Tristan Stewart tied a career-high with five RBI on a 3x4 hitting effort. Kyle Gallagher, Doug Metille, Britt Westman and Pat Whitt each collected two hits apiece. Zach Weston was hit with the loss in relief, giving up one earned run on two base hits in one-third of an inning in the 10th.
Game 2 saw Northeastern take a quick 8-0 lead in the first three innings en route to a 13-hit attack for the game. The Bearcats could only muster five base hits, two from Gallagher, and push one run across in the sixth frame. Starter Matt Coons took the setback allowing five earned runs in 1.2 innings. Redman starter Cody Hughey was credited with the win going six full innings and fanning four batters.
Next up, the 'Cats travel to Conway, Ark. to face Central Arkansas on Feb. 19-20. The two teams are scheduled for two seven inning games to begin at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday while they wrap up the series with one nine-inning contest beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
