Bearcats Down Baptist in Extra Innings
WP: Brett Bognar (1-2)
Extra Base Hits
BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State baseball team wrapped up the 2004 regular season in dramatic fashion, defeating Southwest Baptist, 16-7, in 11 innings Tuesday afternoon. Northwest now stands at 32-21 on the season, 18-13 in the MIAA.
The Bearcats jumped on the board early, scoring two runs in both of the first two innings, before Baptist tied the game at 4-4 by putting up a four spot in the bottom of the fourth.
Each team plated two in the fifth, and SBU took a one-run lead after scoring a single run in the bottom of the seventh. Needing to score at least one in the top of the ninth to prolong the game, John White (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) led off with a single to left. Seth Evans (Jr., Lenox, Iowa) followed that with a single, and the runners moved up to second and third on the errant throw back to the infield. The next batter, Mike Babb (Jr., Millington, Tenn.) kept the 'Cats alive with an RBI groundout to the shortstop to bring home White and send the game to extra innings.
After neither team scored in the 10th, the Bearcat offense errupted in the 11th. After taking a one-run lead, Kyle Gallagher (Jr., Bellevue, Neb.) stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and crushed a grand slam to put Northwest up by five. After a wild pitch brought home the seventh run of the inning, Babb hammered his second collegiate home run to drive in three more, as the Bearcats went on to the 16-7 win.
Brett Bognar (Jr., St. Charles, Mo.) picked up his first win of the season, pitching five innings of scoreless baseball in relief of starter Jeremy Teter (Sr., Macon, Mo.).
The Bearcats will now head to Warrensburg to take part in the MIAA Tournament to be held this Friday through Sunday.
