BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State baseball team split a doubleheader at Southwest Baptist Monday afternoon. SBU took game one, 8-7, while the 'Cats came back to take the second contest, 14-8, and snap a six-game losing streak. The Bearcats now stand at 31-21 overall, 17-13 in the MIAA.
The 'Cats found themselves in a hole early, trailing SBU by a count of 7-3 after three in the opening game of the three-game series. Northwest battled back, scoring two in the sixth on the first home run of the season by Cameron Dodd (Jr., Manteca, Calif.).
Northwest scored one in the seventh and then tied the game on the first home run of the day from David Dugan (Sr., Kansas City, Mo.). In the home half of the eighth, a lead-off walk turned into the game-winning run after an error, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly brought home the eighth run of the day for Southwest Baptist, who took the first game, 8-7.
Game two was a different story. The Bearcats found themselves with a 9-5 lead at the end of three, thanks in part to Dugan's second home run of the day, which was a two-run blast in the top of the first. SBU quickly make things tight by scoring three in the fourth to cut the Bearcat lead to one, 9-8; however, the 'Cats would answer in the fifth and sixth innings.
With two on and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Drew Mettille (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) doubled to right to plate both runners and extend the Northwest lead to three. Then with two out and one on, Dugan doubled to left to plate one run, and the next batter, Tristan Stewart (Fr., Crystal Lake, Ill.) homered to left-center to put the 'Cats in front by the final score of 14-8.
The Bearcats took advantage of four errors by the SBU defense in game two to even Jacob Taylor's record at 2-2 on the season. The win also assured the Bearcats of a spot in this weekend's MIAA Tournament.
