MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State baseball team dropped its fifth consecutive game overall, falling to No. 1 Central Missouri State, 8-1, Sunday afternoon at Bearcat Field. The 'Cats now stand at 30-20 on the season, 16-12 in the MIAA.
The game, originally scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., was delayed 40 minutes due to rain. When the two teams finally took the field, both pitchers gave up lead-off singles, but neither team could do anything with that runner.
After Northwest starter David Dugan (Sr., Kansas City, Mo.) recorded two quick strikeouts in the second, the game went into its second rain delay. After a 30 minute stoppage, Dugan hit the first batter he saw. The Mules took advantage of a walk and then an error on a single to right field to plate two and and take an early lead.
After Central built a 5-0 lead, the Bearcats scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth. Seth Evans (Jr., Lenox, Iowa), who led off the inning with a walk, scored on a sacrifice fly by Drew Mettille (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa).
Central Missouri State tacked on an insurance run in the eighth and two in the ninth en route to the 8-1 win. The Mules were able to take advantage of a Bearcat defense that committed six errors on the day.
Northwest will now travel to Bolivar to take on Southwest Baptist in a doubleheader on Monday, May 3.
