MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State baseball team dropped two critical games to Washburn Wednesday afternoon. The Ichabods jumped on the board early en route to the 7-3 game one win. The Bearcats dropped a slug-fest, 10-9, in game two, falling to 30-17 on the season, 16-9 in conference play.
Washburn jumped on starter David Dugan (Sr., Kansas City, Mo.), using a single, a stolen base and a double to push across a single run in the first. The Ichabods scored one again in the second, as Dugan's eighth walk of the season came around to score.
The Bearcat bats remained quiet until the fourth, when a lead-off walk to Seth Evans (Jr., Lenox, Iowa) turned into a run on a ground-out by Brad Schwarz (Sr., Johnston, Iowa). After four, the 'Cats trailed 2-1.
After Washburn scored another run in the fifth, the Ichabods exploded for four runs in the seventh to secure the win. The Bearcats loaded the bases in their half of the seventh and scored two runs, but it was not enough, as Washburn took game one, 7-3.
Game two saw Washburn once again jump on top early on a three-run home run to left field. The Ichabods put three more on the board to take a 6-0 lead before the Bearcats began their comeback.
In the bottom of the second, with two outs, one one and one run in, Mike Babb (Jr., Millington, Tenn.) doubled to left to drive home the second run of the inning. Babb would later come around to score on a single by Marcus West (Jr., Kansas City, Mo.), as the 'Cats cut the score to 6-3.
After a solo home run by the Ichabods in the top of the third gave Washburn a four-run lead, the Bearcat offense answered again. Schwarz led off the inning with a single and came around to score on three wild pitches by the Washburn starter. After John White (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) was hit by a pitch, Babb drilled the first home run of his collegiate career over the left-field wall to bring the cats to within one at 7-6.
Washburn put two more runs on the board in the fifth, but the Bearcats refused to go quietly. Tristan Stewart (Fr., Crystal Lake, Ill.) got things started with a walk and then stole second, before coming around to score on a single by Kyle Gallagher (Jr., Bellevue, Neb.). Then, with one out and two one, Cameron Dodd (Jr., Menteca, Calif.) came through with a single to tie the score at 9-9.
Jeremy Tapps (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa), who came came in in relief in the fifth, recorded two quick outs in the top of the seventh, before surrendering the eventual game-winning home run to Michael Hammersmith. The Bearcats went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, falling 10-9.
