MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State baseball team used an offensive explosion in game one and timely hitting in game two to complete a three-game sweep of Pittsburg State Saturday afternoon. The 'Cats pounded out 15 hits to win game one, 19-2, and came back from a one-run deficit in the sixth to take game two, 8-7. The 'Cats are now 25-13 on the season, 11-7 in the MIAA.

The Bearcats wasted no time in game one, jumping on Gorilla pitching and posting four runs in the first inning. The 'Cats were just getting warmed up and put up five runs in the second inning. After the Gorillas recorded two quick outs in the second, Seth Evans (Jr., Lenox, Iowa) singled and stole second. A walk to Matt Coons (So., Dearborn, Mo.) walked to bring Brad Schwarz (Sr., Johnston, Iowa) to the plate.

Schwarz crushed a three-run home run to put the Bearcats up 7-2. After Tristan Stewart (Fr., Crystal Lake, Ill.) doubled, Kyle Gallagher (Jr., Bellevue, Neb.) smacked the team's second home run of the inning to left-center to give the 'Cats a 9-2 lead. The Northwest offense continued to look impressive, scoring at least two runs in every inning.

Schwarz came to the plate again in the third inning with two outs, and the result was much the same as the first time. Schwarz drilled a two-run home run, as the 'Cats ran away with game one 19-2. Schwarz went 4 for 4 with two home runes and eight runs driven in to lead the Bearcats in game one.

Game two saw the 'Cats once again jump ahead early. Northwest plated a single run in the first, but Pittsburg State was ready for a battle. The Gorillas scored two runs in the top of the second, and the 'Cats answered with three in the bottom half of the inning.

Pittsburg State retook the lead in the third, scoring four runs on five hits. The 'Cats scored a run in the bottom of the frame to close the gap to 6-5. The Gorillas held the Bearcats scoreless in the fourth, ending a streak of 10 consecutive innings that Northwest had scored at least one run, but the Bearcat bats would not be silences for long.

In the Northwest fifth, a lead-off walk to Coons turned into a run after a double off the bat of Schwarz. That was followed by a single from Stewart that brought Schwarz home to give Northwest a 7-6 lead.

David Dugan (Sr., Kansas City, Mo.) gave the 'Cats some breathing room by hitting his fifth home run of the season to put Northwest up by two. That insurance run would prove valuable in the top of the seventh, as Pittsburg State's Brian Ahlers hit a solo homer to right field to close the gap to one, but it was not enough. Brett Bognar (Jr., St. Charles, Mo.) pitched the final two innings of the day to earn his second save of the year.

In game one, Dugan went six innings, giving up three hits and two earned runs, while striking out eight to pick up his seventh win of the season. In the second contest, Jeremy Teter (Sr., Macon, Mo.) pitched five innings and surrendered five earned runs on 10 hits to improve his record to 5-1 on the season.
