Extra Base Hits
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State baseball pounded out 13 hits in Friday's 13-8 win over Pittsburg State at Bearcat Field. The Bearcats now stand at 23-13 on the season, 9-7 in the MIAA.
The game began as a pitchers dual, with both starters working quickly and keeping the other team off balance. The Gorillas manufactured a run in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead. The 'Cats answered in the bottom of the inning. With two out and no one on base, David Dugan (Sr., Kansas City, Mo.) drilled his fourth home run of the season well over the right-field wall to tie the score at 1-1.
The 'Cats took the lead after scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and Pittsburg State responded with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth. Then, with the game tied, the 'Cats broke it open in the bottom of the sixth.
The 'Cats took advantage of a one-out error by the Gorilla third baseman opened the flood gates. The inning was capped by a two-out, three-run bomb off the bat of Matt Coons (So., Dearborn, Mo.) that hit off the top of the scoreboard in center field. Northwest collected six hits in the inning and scored seven runs to take a 10-3 at the end of six.
After the Gorillas plated one run in the seventh, the 'Cats once again took advantage of two walks by Pittsburg State pitching to extend their lead to nine. The inning was highlighted by a bases-loaded double off the bat of Cameron Dodd (Jr., Manteca, Calif.) that brought home three runs. At the end of seven, the 'Cats had a 13-4 lead.
The Gorillas put together a small rally, scoring one run in the eighth and three runs in the ninth, but came up short, as Northwest came away with the 13-8 win.
Dodd went 2 for 5 in the win, driving home four runs, while Mike Babb (Jr., Millington, Tenn.) smacked two doubles and drove home two runs in three at bats. Marcus West (Jr., Kansas City, Mo.) and Kyle Gallagher (Jr., Bellevue, Neb.) also added two hits each.
