MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State baseball team swept an Opening Day doubleheader against Grand View College Wednesday afternoon at Bearcat Field. 'Cats took game one, 11-8, and game two, 7-3.

The Vikings jumped on the board early, scoring four runs in the top of the first, taking advantage of a Bearcat error that opened the door for three of the four runs to score. Northwest went quietly in the bottom of the first and then slowly began to scratch away at the Grand View lead.

After scoring a single run in the bottom of the second and giving up a single run in the top of the fourth, the Bearcats began putting things together in their half of the fourth. Kyle Gallagher (Jr., Bellevue, Neb.) led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball by the Viking catcher.

The next two batter walked to load the bases for Seth Evans (Jr., Lenox, Iowa). Evans hit into a fielder's choice to score Gallagher from third. A wild pitch by Grand View plated Brad Schwarz (Sr., Johnston, Iowa) from third and advanced Evans to second. Evans stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cameron Dodd (Jr., Manteca, Calif.).

After Grand View answered with three runs in the fifth, Northwest came back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by an RBI triple off the bat of Schwarz. The 'Cats headed to the bottom of the sixth, trailing 8-7.

The Viking pitching and defense fell apart in the Bearcat sixth. Marcus West (Jr., Kansas City, Mo.) reached n an error by the shortstop and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A sacifice by Dodd moved West to third, and after a walk, West scored on a sacrifice fly by Drew Mettille (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa).

A double by Gallagher drove home David Dugan (Sr., Kansas City, Mo.). A double by Schwarz and a single by Mike French (Sr., Kansas City, Mo.), followed by another single by Evans plated two more runs to propel the 'Cats to the 11-8 win.

In game two, Grand View once again jumped out in front and took a 3-0 leading into the bottom of the fifth. Dodd doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a error by the pitcher. A Dugan single plated Dodd and was followed by a single by Mettille.

Dugan came home on an error by the first baseman. Two batters later, French singled to plate Mettille to tie the score at 3-3. Jeremy Tapps (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa) held the Vikings scoreless to send the game to the bottom of the sixth still tied.

Two of the first three batters walked to begin the sixth. Evans, the lead-off batter, scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball by the Viking catcher. After a walk, pinch-hitter John White gave the 'Cats some insurance, singling to plate Mettille. White then stole second and came home on an Andrew Donovan (Sr., Ballwin, Mo.) triple that scored two and put the 'Cats in front by the final of 11-8.
