'Cats Take Rubber Game at Northeastern
WP: Van Gilmore (1-0)
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- The Northwest Missouri State baseball team took the rubber game of the three-game series against Northeastern State, 9-6, Sunday in Tahlequah. The 'Cats are now 2-1 on the season.
Northwest scored early and often, jumping on the Redmen for three runs in the first inning. With two outs and two men on base, Kyle Gallagher (Jr., Bellevue, Neb.) stepped to the plate and swatted the first home run of the season for the 'Cats, putting Northwest up 3-0.
Seth Evans (Jr., Lenox, Iowa) got on base via being hit by a pitch to get things started in the second inning. Following a walk, Drew Mettille (Jr., Urbandale, Iowa) singled to load the bases for Andrew Donovan (Sr., Ballwin, Mo.). Donovan grounded out to third to drive Evans home and increase the Bearcat lead to 4-1.
After adding a single run in the third on the first collegiate home run for Ryley Westman (Fr., Smithville, Mo.), the Bearcat offense erupted for four runs in the fifth. Donovan kicked off the inning by earning a walk, which was followed by back-to-back singles by Gallagher and Brad Scwarz (Sr., Johnston, Iowa). A bases-loaded walk to Mike French (Sr., Kansas City, Mo.) brought Donovan home, and a sacrifice fly by Westman plated Gallagher and moved the other two runners up one base.
Another sacrifice fly, this time by John White (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) brought Schwarz home for the third run of the inning. Northwest earned its fourth run on a balk by Northeastern.
The Redmen answered in the bottom of the inning, putting four runs on the board to bring them to within four. Northeastern added a single run in the seventh, but that was all the offense the Northwest pitching staff would allow, as the 'Cats went on to the 9-6 win.
Gallagher led the 'Cats with a four for five effort, scoring two runs and driving in three. Mettille added three hits and one run scored. Winning pitcher Van Gilmore (Sr., Clarinda, Iowa) went three and two thirds inning, giving up five hits and one earned run, walking one and striking out one. Matt Coons picked up the save, going one inning, walking one and striking out two.
