Northwest to host 2013 Special Olympics area basketball tournament
MARYVILLE, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University will host the Special Olympics Missouri, northwest area basketball tournament Saturday, Jan. 12. Over 250 athletes from across the region will come to Maryville to compete in the event.
Opening Ceremonies will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Bearcat Arena and will include entertainment from the Northwest Cheerleaders and Bearcat Steppers, as well as the Special Olympics cheer squad and additional community groups. The Opening Ceremonies will also feature the traditional running of the Special Olympics torch and the athlete oath. Games will start at 9:30 a.m. and run until approximately 4 p.m. and will be played in Bearcat Arena and the Student Rec Center.
Competition divisions consist of individual skills, team skills, 3-on-3, modified and regulation, and unified basketball. Fans are invited to show support by cheering for the athletes at the free event, and are welcome to come and go throughout the day-long event. For more information and details visit www.somo.org.
Special Olympics Missouri is a year-round program of sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and is dedicated to improving the overall health and fitness of the athletes.
