MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State men's and women's basketball teams will hold their annual "Basketball Bash," this Thursday evening starting at 8 p.m. in Bearcat Arena.

Admission is free and the doors will open at 7:45 p.m. The teams will provide free pizza to the first 200 people.

The program will feature performances by the Bearcat Cheerleaders and Stepper. There will be a number of interactive contests including a chance to win an iPad. The evening will conclude with fans getting their first look at the 2013-14 Bearcat basketball teams.

The Northwest men's team is led by fifth-year head coach Ben McCollum. The Bearcats went 21-10 last season, falling in the MIAA Tournament title game.

The senior-laden Bearcats are led by Dillon Starzl who averaged 13.7 points per contest last season. Bryston Williams appeared in all 31 contests for Northwest and classmate Kyle Schlake made 27 starts. The Bearcats will also benefit from the return of guard DeShaun Cooper who missed the 2012-13 season with an injury. Cooper was a first-team All-MIAA selection as a junior in 2011-12.

The 2013-14 season starts with an exhibition at Bearcat Arena against Graceland on Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. The regular season begins on Nov. 9 against Upper Iowa. Northwest will host Baker on Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. in the team's home opener.

The Bearcat women's basketball team is led by first-year head coach Michael Smith. Smith, who spent the past five seasons at former MIAA-member Truman State, takes over a team that was 15-13 last season and returns eight letterwinners.

Junior Ashleigh Nelson is the team's returning leading scorer, averaging 10.3 points per contest as a sophomore. Junior Annie Mathews averaged 9.7 points per contest and sophomore Tember Schechinger averaged 8.5 points per game. Senior Monique Stevens recorded a team-high 138 total assists and started 24 contests as a junior.

The Bearcats will play an exhibition game against Illinois State on Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. and the regular season begins on Nov. 9 when the team heads to Quincy, Ill. The Bearcats open at home on Nov. 16 against Truman State at 7:30 p.m.
