Andy Peterson Hired as Assistant Athletic Director for FacilitiesMARYVILLE, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University Director of Athletics Mel Tjeerdsma has announced the hiring of Andy Peterson as Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities.
“Andy Peterson has been part of Bearcat Athletics for the past nine years as a student-athlete and a part-time coach,” said Tjeerdsma. “We are pleased to be able to elevate him to a full-time position with our athletic administrative staff. He is a proven asset and his presence will help us enhance our athletic department.“
Peterson, who begins his responsibilities at Northwest immediately, will also remain as the men’s basketball assistant coach, in a part-time capacity, a role he has held since the 2011-12 season. In his new role, Peterson will oversee day-to-day facility operation and scheduling for athletics and will assist with game management.
“I am extremely excited to be joining the administrative staff here at Northwest and taking on a new role within the Bearcat family,” Peterson said. “I am looking forward to facing some new responsibilities and challenges. To be able to work at my alma mater is such a blessing, especially given how successful and close knit the community at Northwest is. It is something that I believe is attractive to any person who participated in sports at the collegiate level.”
Peterson played for the Bearcats from 2003-2008 and helped the Bearcats claim the MIAA tournament title in 2008. That year, he was named All-MIAA Honorable Mention as well as Academic All-MIAA. The Bearcats also won the MIAA regular season championships during the 2006-07 season as he led the team in minutes played. Peterson finished his career with the third highest three-point percentage and is sixth all-time in steals. After graduation, he spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Northwest, under former-head coach Steve Tappmeyer in 2008-2009 and now present Bearcat head coach Ben McCollum in 2009-2010.
Peterson spent the 2010-11 season as the assistant coach at Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa, before returning to Northwest as the men’s basketball assistant coach. A native of Trenton, Mo., he earned two bachelor’s degrees in 2007 and a master’s degree in Agriculture in 2008. He received a second master’s degree in Physical Education from Northwest in 2010. He is married to former Bearcat track and field athlete Emily (Churchman), who now serves as the Bearcat Cross Country/Track and Field assistant coach. The couple currently resides in Maryville.
