Northwest names Marshall Fey as assistant athletic director for media relations and communications
Maryville, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University announces the hiring of Marshall Fey as its assistant athletic director for media relations and communications. In his new role at Northwest, Fey will coordinate media relations for the Department of Athletics, including the production of athletic news releases and publications and overseeing the game day media needs of the University’s 14 intercollegiate sports.
"We are excited to have someone of Marshall's caliber come on board," Northwest Director of Athletics Mel Tjeerdsma said. "He is bright, energetic and passionate about college athletics, and we are excited to have Marshall join the Bearcat family.
We understand the importance of this position and feel like Marshall's broad skill set and experience will help us elevate our media relations efforts as that field continues to change with new trends in social and digital media."
Fey, who begins his duties at Northwest Monday, July 15, comes to Maryville from The University of Akron (Ohio) where he has served as the assistant director for new media for the past three years. Prior to his stint at Akron, he spent time as an assistant sports information director at California State University Bakersfield and gained experience as an athletics communications intern at Harvard University.
"I grew up in Merriam, Kan., so after spending the better part of a decade moving around the country, it is a great feeling to be coming back to a familiar area,” Fey said. “I knew I wanted to be a little closer to home and also be able to actively contribute to a progressive-minded and competitive athletics department. I could not have asked for a better combination than what I found at Northwest Missouri State. I want to thank Mel Tjeerdsma for giving me the opportunity to become a part of this university."
Fey comes to Northwest with some familiarity of the Bearcats and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association after competing as a track student-athlete and graduating from Fort Hays State with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He then went on to complete a Master of Education in sport administration at Wichita State University. Fey was a student assistant in the media relations office during his time at Fort Hays State.
