This week in Bearcat Athletics
Women's basketball begins postseason play, baseball begins conference play and softball heads to Joplin, Mo., for the second consecutive weekend this week in Bearcat Athletics.
The 18th-ranked Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team begins its postseason run with the MIAA Tournament, running Friday through Sunday in Kansas City at Municipal Auditorium. The Bearcats will be the number one seed in the tournament after being crowned regular season champions last Wednesday. Northwest will face eighth-seeded Truman at noon on Friday.
The Bearcats beat Truman twice during the season. The first, 73-72 in double overtime down in Kirksville in January, and the second came on Feb. 16 with an 87-69 victory. Northwest has won the MIAA Tournament twice under coach Steinmeyer, in 2004 and 2008.
The Northwest baseball team returns closer to home this week after a four-game series down in Texas with West Texas A&M. The Bearcats lost the first three games of the weekend and play the fourth later on Monday. The Bearcats lost their opener on Friday with a 12-5 defeat and were swept on day two, 14-9 and 22-8. Jake Kretzer and Evan Connell lead the team in the young season with a .429 batting average and Kretzer has four RBIs.
Northwest plays Newman on Tuesday in a nine-inning contest and will begin MIAA play already this weekend as they travel to second ranked Central Missouri for a four-game series beginning on Friday.
The Bearcat softball team is coming off a 2-2 split this past weekend down at the Missouri Southern tournament. Northwest defeated Drury 13-3 and Cameron 6-0 on Saturday and were beaten 5-0 by Quincy and 13-3 by Southeastern Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon.
Northwest heads back to Joplin this weekend for the Teri Mathis Zenner memorial tournament where they will face Central Oklahoma, Illinois-Springfield, Missouri S&T and Upper Iowa. Hailee Hendricks leads the team with a .391 batting average so far this season and also has a team-high 10 RBIs and four stolen bases.
Indoor track and field will have the weekend off before heading down to Albuquerque, N.M., for the NCAA Championships on the 11th and 12th. The Bearcats competed this past weekend at the MIAA Championships. Kate Walter, Katti Carrol and the men's distance medley team of Ryan Darling, Zach Dixon, Derek Roberts and T.R. Pursell all took home all-MIAA honors this weekend.
