Northwest Missouri State men's and women's basketball begins MIAA play this week with a pair of road games and Bearcat football hosts an NCAA quarterfinal rematch this week in Bearcat Athletics.
The Northwest men and women will both travel to Emporia State and Washburn this week. On Wednesday the Bearcats will travel to Emporia State with the women tipping-off at 5:30 with the men to follow at around 7:30 p.m. The fifth-ranked Lady Hornets are the defending national champions and are 3-1 this season. The Hornet men are 3-2 on the season, having won three-straight.
On Saturday Northwest will travel to Topeka, Kan., to face Washburn at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. The Ichabods are 3-1 this season, while the No. 9 Lady Blues are 4-0. The Northwest men split two games last week. On Tuesday the Bearcats defeated Baker 87-63 behind Shaneel Narayan's 20 points and then fell to Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday 47-46.
The Bearcat women won their lone game of the week, defeating Peru State 82-69 Saturday night in Maryville. Kyla Roehrig had a career-high 28 points and pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds in the Northwest victory. It is Roehrig's third consecutive 20-point effort.
The Northwest football team hosts Central Missouri on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a quarterfinal matchup. The Bearcats won the regular season game with the Mules on Nov. 6 in Warrensburg, Mo., 17-16. Todd Adolf kicked a career-long 45-yard field goal as time expired in the victory.
The Bearcats came from behind for the second straight week on Saturday in its 35-31 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville in the second round of the NCAA playoffs. The win avenges the Bearcats' only loss of the season, when they fell 16-7 in the season opener on Sept. 2 to the Javelinas.
Blake Bolles threw for 380 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Jake Soy had a career-high 12 catches for a career-best 161 yards and a score. Josh Baker caught a three-yard touchdown pass with 17 seconds remaining to give the Bearcats their first lead of the game against Kingsville. Central Missouri (11-2) comes into Saturday's game coming off a 55-41 win over top-seeded Abilene Christian.
