This week in Bearcat Athletics

The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team begins NCAA Tournament play this weekend, baseball travels to Missouri Southern and the tennis teams have a full week of matches this week in Bearcat Athletics.

The nationally-ranked Bearcat women's basketball team heads to the NCAA South Central regional this weekend. Northwest (25-4) will be the second seed in the tournament played Friday-Monday in Tahlequah, Okla. The Bearcats will play seventh-seeded Texas Woman's (22-10) at 2:30 p.m. Northwest recently won its third MIAA Tournament title with a 79-63 victory on Sunday over Emporia State. The regional is hosted by Northeastern State, who will be the top seed.

The Northwest baseball team continues conference play as the Bearcats hit the road to Joplin, Mo., to face Missouri Southern in a four-game series beginning Friday at 4 p.m. Northwest will play a doubleheader with the Lions on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and finish off the series on Sunday with a nine-inning game at Noon.

The Bearcats are in search of their first win of the season. Northwest is coming off of three losses to top-ranked Central Missouri on Sunday and Monday in the Bearcats' first MIAA series of the season.

The Northwest men's and women's tennis squads have three matches this week. The Bearcats host William Jewell on Wednesday at 3 p.m., travel to Washburn on Friday at 3 p.m. and Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday for a 10 a.m. start. The Northwest men also host Southeastern Oklahoma State on Sunday.

Tyler Shaw will also be competing this weekend at the national indoor track and field meet in Albuquerque, N.M. Shaw will compete in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles at 6:35 p.m. and in the 200-meter dash at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday.
