This week in Bearcat Athletics

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Men's and women's basketball has a pair of conference games, indoor track and field travels to Warrensburg for the second time this season, and softball begins its season this week in Bearcat Athletics.

Basketball will host Truman on Wednesday night with the women beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the men at around 7:30. The Bearcats will also travel to Central Missouri this weekend in a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday night will be Greek Night at Bearcat Arena and at halftime of the men's game, Northwest will have its student-athlete recognition. The recognition is for those student-athletes with a 3.25 GPA or higher.

Both the men and the women earned sweeps last week over Lincoln and then rival Missouri Western on Saturday night in St. Joseph. The Bearcat men won 59-56 over Lincoln thanks to a Jake Reinders blocked three-point attempt at the buzzer. DeShaun Cooper scored a career-high 31 points in Northwest's win over Missouri Western on Saturday, 73-69.

The Truman men are 6-13 overall and 4-13 in the MIAA. Northwest was defeated in Kirksville earlier this season 73-58. Central Missouri is 16-8 and 11-7 in the conference. The Mules defeated the Northwest men 81-68 back in January in Maryville.

The 22nd-ranked Bearcat women defeated Lincoln 81-59 and held on against Missouri Western on, 91-82 last week. Gabby Curtis averaged 25 points during the week to lead Northwest. The Bearcats won in overtime over Truman 73-72 earlier this season and beat the Jennies 75-72 in Maryville. Kyla Roehrig averaged 14.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in those two wins. Truman is 11-10 overall and 9-8 in the MIAA. The Jennies are 13-11 and 9-9 in conference.

Northwest indoor track and field will be making its second trip of three to Central Missouri this weekend. The Bearcats will be competing in the Central Missouri Classic on Friday in Warrensburg. Northwest competed at the Concordia Invite this past weekend.

Tyler Shaw won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.04. Katti Carroll won the 3,000-meters, running a time of 10:23.79. Taylor Overmiller took first in the 800-meters with a time of 1:56.67.

Bearcat softball travels to Oklahoma to begin its 2011 season. Northwest will face Northeastern State in Tahlequah in a Tuesday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Bearcats will then head to Edmond to face Central Oklahoma in another doubleheader at 1 p.m.

Northwest finished last season 26-24 and 9-11 in the MIAA. The Bearcats are coached by Ryan Anderson who enters his fifth season at Northwest.
