Football plays the Fall Classic at Arrowhead IX, volleyball ends its regular-season with three matches, including two at home and men's basketball begins its 2010-11 season this week in Bearcat athletics.

The third-ranked Northwest Missouri State football team travels to Kansas City on Saturday to face Pittsburg State (5-5, 3-5 MIAA) in the ninth-annual Fall Classic at Arrowhead. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. The Bearcats (8-1, 8-0 MIAA) are coming off a thrilling 17-16 victory last weekend over No. 6 Central Missouri. Todd Adolf kicked a career-long 45-yard field goal as time expired to give Northwest the win.

The Bearcats are 6-2 in the Fall Classic game and have won the last four meetings in Arrowhead. Northwest defeated Pittsburg State 30-10 last season as the Northwest defense recorded three interceptions in the game, including a Marcus Martin 38-yard interception return for a touchdown.

The Bearcat volleyball team (14-12, 10-7 MIAA) will end its regular-season this week with three matches, including Senior Night on Friday against No. 16 Truman (23-7, 12-6 MIAA) at 7 p.m. Northwest will also host Missouri Western (12-15, 8-10 MIAA) on Military Appreciation Night on Wednesday. Fans are encouraged to wear camouflage or red, white and blue to the game in support of our military personnel. The Bearcats will then close the week at Missouri Southern (17-12, 7-10 MIAA) on Saturday.

Northwest split last week's matches, winning 3-2 against Nebraska-Omaha in the "Reunion at Red Oak." Alex Hanna led the Bearcats with 13 kills in the win over the Mavericks. Paige Spangenberg led five Bearcats in double-figure digs with 21 in the match. The Bearcats closed out the week losing on Friday to eighth-ranked Central Missouri 3-0.

The Northwest men's basketball team opens the 2010-11 season on Sunday afternoon inside Bearcat Arena. The Bearcats will face Southwest Minnesota State at 3 p.m. The Mustangs were 17-12 a season ago.

The Bearcats are led by second-year head coach Ben McCollum. Northwest (12-15 overall in 2009-10) returns all-MIAA Honorable Mention performer Elijah Allen and last season's MIAA Freshman of the Year DeShaun Cooper.

The Bearcat cross country teams are off this week as they prepare for the NCAA South Central Regional meet on Saturday, Nov. 20 hosted by Central Missouri. Northwest ran at the MIAA Championships on Saturday with both the men and women finishing third. Angela Adams placed second for the women with a time of 21:32.30, while T.R.
