This Week in Bearcat Athletics

Football is on the road for a top-10 showdown for conference supremacy, volleyball has a "reunion at Red Oak" and cross country will compete at the MIAA Championships this week in Bearcat athletics.

The third-ranked Northwest Missouri State football team travels to No. 6 Central Missouri on Saturday afternoon in a battle for first-place in the MIAA, kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. Northwest (7-1, 7-0 MIAA) is coming off a 45-27 win last Saturday over Fort Hays State. Blake Bolles accounted for four touchdowns in the win and was the Don Black award winner, given to the Homecoming MVP.

Bolles passed for his 69th career touchdown against the Tigers, passing Chris Greisen for the program-record for career TD passes. Wide out Jake Soy caught his 38th touchdown in the game, tying him with Jamaica Rector for first-place on the school's career receiving TDs list. Central Missouri (9-1, 8-0 MIAA) is coming off a 34-21 win over Missouri Southern on Saturday.

The Bearcat volleyball team (13-11, 9-6 MIAA) has a pair of MIAA games this week. Wednesday night Northwest will travel to Red Oak, Iowa for a "home" match against Nebraska-Omaha (15-13, 5-11 MIAA) in the "Reunion at Red Oak" match. Red Oak is the hometown of Bearcat head coach Jessica Rinehart and players Alex Hanna and Paige Spangenberg. The match is set to start at 7 p.m. On Friday the Bearcats will travel to Warrensburg, Mo., to face seventh-ranked Central Missouri (23-4, 13-2 MIAA) at 7 p.m.

Northwest is coming off a 2-1 week last week where the Bearcats fell to non-conference opponent Rockhurst on Wednesday. The Bearcats responded with two conference wins over the weekend. First, Northwest came back from a 2-0 deficit against Pittsburg State on Friday to win 3-2. Setter Laira Akin recorded a career-high 59 assists against the Gorillas. Northwest finished the weekend sweeping Southwest Baptist on Saturday. The Bearcats never trailed in the mach.

The Northwest cross country teams will travel to Fort Hays State this Saturday for the MIAA Championships. The men will begin the meet at 10 a.m. with their 8K race. The women will follow with the 6K race at around 10:50.

The Bearcat soccer team will conclude its 2010 season on Thursday as they travel to Missouri Southern (4-8-4, 4-6-4 MIAA) game time is set for 6 p.m. Northwest (3-10-4, 3-9-3 MIAA) is coming off a 3-1 loss to Nebraska-Omaha Saturday on Senior Day.

The Northwest women's basketball team will also be in action this week. The Bearcats will travel to Omaha, Neb., on Wednesday to face Creighton University in an exhibition game at 5:35 p.m. inside D.J. Sokol Arena.
