This Week in Bearcat Athletics

Football hosts rival Missouri Western on Saturday during Family Weekend, the Bearcat men's tennis team hosts the ITA Regional this weekend and golf looks to stay on a hot streak this week in Bearcat Athletics.

The seventh-ranked Northwest Missouri State football team (2-1, 2-0 MIAA) hosts No. 8 Missouri Western (4-0, 2-0 MIAA) Saturday afternoon at 2:20 p.m. from Bearcat Stadium. The game will be televised live on the new MIAA Network.

Last season Northwest defeated the Griffons 49-35 in St. Joseph. Blake Bolles threw for five touchdowns in the win. Jake Soy hauled in three of Bolles' tosses and Tyler Shaw grabbed the other two. The Bearcat defense forced seven Missouri Western turnovers last season. Northwest has won the last six meetings between the two squads.

Northwest is coming off a 44-10 win on Saturday over Truman. The Bearcats ran for a season-high 269 yards against the Bulldogs on Saturday.

The Bearcat golf team is participating at the Ottawa Invitational in Lawrence, Kan., on Monday and Tuesday. Northwest has won the last two tournaments it's played in this fall. Freshman Cassie Lowell finished in second place at last weekend's Graceland Invite and took medalist honors at last Monday's Nebraska Wesleyan Invite.

The Northwest men's tennis team will be hosting the ITA Regional Friday through Sunday this weekend at the Frank Grube and High Rise tennis courts. Teams from the Heartland, MIAA and Lone Star conferences will be participating at the regional.

Cross Country will be competing at the Emporia Invite on Friday. The Bearcats ran at the Roy Griak Invitational last Saturday with the men finishing in seventh-place out of 28 teams and the women finishing in 12th-place out of 20 teams.

T.R. Pursell finished 10th among collegiate runners at the Roy Griak with a time of 25:57.1. Madison Marshman was the best finisher for the women, finishing in 49th with a time of 24:03.1.

The Bearcat soccer team (1-5-2, 1-4-1 MIAA has a pair of games this week in MIAA play. First, on Thursday Northwest will travel to Nebraska-Omaha for a game at 4 p.m. The Bearcats will return home on Saturday for a game at 11:30 a.m. against Missouri Southern from Bearcat Pitch. The Bearcats are coming off a pair of one-goal defeats to Washburn (2-1 (2OT)) and Southwest Baptist (3-2) last week. Northwest swept MSSU 1-0 in both contests last season and lost twice to UNO in 2009.

The Northwest volleyball team (7-6, 3-2 MIAA) is off this week and will return to action on October 5th when the Bearcats travel to face Nebraska-Omaha.
