The Bearcat women head to Abilene, Texas for the ITA Regional

The Northwest Missouri State soccer team plays a pair of home games, the Bearcat football team looks to open conference play 2-0 and the women's tennis team competes at the ITA Regional in Abilene, Texas, this week in Bearcat athletics.

The Bearcat soccer team picked up its first victory of the season on Sunday when they defeated Emporia State 1-0 behind the strength of Emilee Davison's first collegiate goal. Northwest (1-3-2, 1-2-1 MIAA) will host Washburn (1-3-1) on Thursday at 4 p.m. from Bearcat Pitch and Southwest Baptist (2-3-1) will come to town on Saturday for a 2 p.m. start.

The seventh-ranked Northwest (1-1, 1-0 MIAA) football team will travel to Truman (2-1) on Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff in the 76th annual battle for the Hickory Stick. The Hickory Stick is the oldest traveling trophy in Division II. Truman leads the all-time series 42-29-4 but the Bearcats have won the past eight meetings and 13-of-14. Northwest is looking to go to 2-0 in MIAA play following its 58-23 win last weekend over Nebraska-Omaha. The Bulldogs are coming off a 34-9 defeat to Fort Hays State last week. The Bearcats defeated Truman 70-0 last year in Maryville thanks to Blake Bolles' three touchdown tosses.

The Northwest women's tennis team will be traveling south to Abilene, Texas, to compete in the ITA Regional Friday through Sunday. 22 teams from the Heartland, MIAA and Lone Star conferences will be participating at the regional.

The Bearcat (5-6, 1-2 MIAA) volleyball squad will play a pair of road games this weekend when they travel to Pittsburg State (4-6) Friday night at 7 p.m. Northwest will finish the week at Southwest Baptist (6-4) on Saturday at 2 p.m. Northwest split with SBU last season with each team winning on the other's home court. Bearcat setter Laira Akin is coming off a week where she averaged 10.6 assists per set.

The Northwest cross country teams will be traveling to the Roy Griak meet at the University of Minnesota this weekend where they will be competing against several Division I programs.
