Soccer Hosts Its First MIAA Game of the Season

Volleyball Will Face Two Ranked Opponents This Week

The Northwest Missouri State football team looks to get back on the winning tract against Nebraska-Omaha, Bearcat volleyball begins conference play against two ranked opponents, and soccer has its first home MIAA game of the year this week in Bearcat athletics.

The seventh-ranked Bearcat football team (0-1) travels to play UNO (0-2) on Saturday night. The game will be televised on the new MIAA Network, kickoff is set for 6:20 p.m. The Mavericks are coming off of a 38-23 loss to Ouachita Baptist last Saturday.

The running game will be a key in this matchup, as UNO has averaged nearly 240 yards of rushing per game this season. While the Northwest defense held Texas A&M-Kingsville to 86 yards on 38 carries (2.3 avg) in the opener.

The Northwest volleyball team opens league play this week with three matchups. Northwest begins the week playing at fourth-ranked Washburn on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Lady Blues are 8-0 this season and have lost just two sets all year.

Head coach Jessica Rinehart will then make her home debut on Friday and Saturday as Northwest plays its first home matches of the 2010 season as the Bearcats host Fort Hays State (3-5) Friday at 7 p.m. and will play no. 13 Emporia State (6-1) Saturday at 3 p.m.

The Bearcats are coming off a 2-2 split last weekend at the St. Edwards Classic in Austin, Texas. Junior Alex Hanna led the Bearcats with 46 kills in Texas, while freshman Whitney Mason was third on the team with 26 kills and led Northwest with a .385 hitting percentage. Libero Paige Spangenberg averaged 4.64 digs per set for the Bearcats this last weekend and was named to the All-Classic team.

Bearcat soccer (0-2-2, 0-1-1 MIAA) plays a pair of games this week in the MIAA. Northwest will host its first conference opponent of the year on Thursday against Central Missouri (3-0) at 4 p.m. Northwest went 0-1-1 against the Jennies last season. The Bearcats will then travel to Emporia State (0-3-1) on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game.

Northwest lost 0-1 at Truman and tied Missouri Western 1-1 on the road last week. Kelly Obley scored the lone goal for the Bearcats, the first of the season for her and second of Obley's career.
