Enhancing its brand, Northwest partners with SMA
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State University has reached an agreement with Strategic Marketing Affiliates (SMA) to manage its domestic U.S. trademark licensing program, effective immediately.
"Partnering with Northwest Missouri State University on the management of their licensing program is a real honor to SMA," said Bob Bernard, President and CEO of SMA. "The traditions and the successes of Northwest Missouri State University both academically and athletically make for a very strong collegiate brand. We look forward to working with Morris White and his team in promoting and protecting the Bearcat brand and making it a powerful brand in the collegiate marketplace."
"We are pleased to partner with SMA," said Dr. Bob Boerigter, Director of Athletes at Northwest. "They have a proven record of providing great service to Division II institutions and we believe this partnership will be of great benefit to Northwest Missouri State University and Bearcat athletics."
Strategic Marketing Affiliates manages the licensing programs for more than 170 institutions. Northwest becomes the seventh MIAA institution represented by SMA, joining the University of Central Missouri, Missouri Southern State University, Missouri Western State University, Southwest Baptist University, the University of Nebraska-Omaha and Washburn University. Strategic Marketing Affiliates also represents the MIAA Conference.
SMA will manage the licensing of Northwest's athletics logos and expand both the variety and market reach of its branded products. SMA will take the brand and visibility of the athletics department and University to new levels by providing licensed vendors with services such as digitized, authentic logos for embroidering products, collecting royalties and helping enforce Northwest's rights against those who have not received permission to use its brands.
"This partnership couldn't have come at a better time for our department," said Morris White, Northwest's Director of Athletic Marketing, Promotions and Licensing. "The excitement surrounding our national championships in football and cheerleading last year provides a unique opportunity to elevate our licensing program by connecting with our dedicated fan base and enhancing our brand nationally."
Northwest's licensing program was implemented in 2005 to protect the athletic department's ownership interest of its athletic logos and to generate royalty fees. One of the most important functions of the program is to protect Northwest Missouri State University athletics in the legal interests of its registered trademarks.
