Boyce to Serve as Guest Columnist

MARYVILLE, Mo.-David Boyce, who spent more than 20 years covering high school and small college athletics at the Kansas City Star newspaper in Missouri, will serve as a guest columnist to Northwest's athletics Web site,, for the 2010-11 academic year.

"I can't think of a better talent to help tell the many stories of our coaches and student-athletes than David Boyce," said Bryan Boettcher, Northwest Director of Athletic Media Relations and Sports Information. "David is well-known and well-respected for his long-time service in promoting the MIAA. I look forward to pitching him stories and publishing his articles for our fans to enjoy."

Fans can expect to read several articles from Boyce each week ranging from feature stories to game and event previews to recaps. He'll be in attendance at a number of Northwest athletic events - home and away - and follow Northwest's athletic teams as they advance in postseason play.

"I was thrilled when Northwest Missouri State gave me this opportunity," said Boyce. "I truly enjoyed covering Northwest through the years - first with the Kansas City Star and last year with the MIAA. The players, coaches and fans have treated me very well and left me with many fond memories. It is going to be fun writing about all the athletic teams throughout the school year.

"A few years ago, I wrote in my power rankings for the Star that Maryville is a magical place. I believe that more than ever now. Go Bearcats!"

Boyce was named KIAAA Sportswriter of the Year in 1994. He covered boxing at the Star from 1991-2004 including Tommy Morrison and worked both championship fights between Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis. His 1997 exclusive story on Morrison becoming HIV positive was named an Associated Press Sports Editor top 10 feature for papers serving more than 150,000.

Boyce was born in New York City and was raised in Kansas City, Kan. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1988 with a degree in journalism. He is currently one of three official scorers for the Kansas City Royals and is a contributing writer for the Royals Gameday magazine.
