Sixth Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day

Sixth Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day

The sixth annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day will be held this Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the Northwest campus-student recreation center. Admission is free and open to the public and is recommended for both girls and boys ages 4-10.

"It's a day that is recognized across the country in various athletic departments, as well as boys and girls clubs," said Morris White, Northwest Director of Marketing, Promotions and Licensing. "The day itself is so that the women and female athletes are recognized for their participation in athletics."

Northwest will have its female student-athlete teams represented and will hold what is essentially a clinic for each sport. In the recreation center they will place the kids into groups. For each of Northwest's female sports, the kids will rotate from one sport to another and will get one-on-one interaction with the student-athletes from those sports. For example, the volleyball players will show the kids how to bump, set and spike a volleyball. The softball team will show them how to throw a ball and will have a radar gun out for the kids to use and a tee that they can hit off of. Soccer will have a soccer net set up for the kids to kick into.

"Right now we have 30 that have pre-registered, but traditionally we have had a larger walk-up on the day of the event," said White. "Last year we had 20 students or so that walked up. We try to include the boys as well to show them the importance of female participation."

The Bearcat steppers and Bobby the Bearcat will make an appearance Saturday and all that have registered for the event will receive free tickets to Northwest's women's basketball game Saturday afternoon against Missouri Southern.

"We want to continue to build a tradition that both the kids and the student-athletes look forward to each year," said White. "We look to grow on what we've established so far."

If you haven't pre-registered online you can still show up the day of the event and sign-up upon your arrival.
