KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Effective for the 2009 football season, the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) has signed an agreement to send one of its institutions to the Kanza Bowl at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka, Kan., to face a member of the Lone Star Conference, it was announced Monday at a press conference in Topeka. The highest-finishing MIAA team not selected for the Division II playoffs will have the choice to play in either the Kanza Bowl or the Mineral Water Bowl.
"We are excited to take part in this event with the Lone Star Conference," MIAA Commissioner Jim Johnson said. "The organizational committee led by Jeff Litfin and Rick Benke has done a wonderful job to set this event in motion. It will be a great postseason experience for student-athletes, coaches and fans.
"The Lone Star and the MIAA traditionally over the last 10 to 15 years have been two of the conferences in Division II that have been well-represented in the postseason playoffs and in the National Championship game," Johnson added. "I think the game that takes place in December in Topeka will be as good as any game in the Division II playoffs."
The Kanza Bowl, one of only four NCAA Division II bowl games, will be played the first Saturday in December each year, always featuring a match-up of teams from the MIAA and Lone Star Conference. The agreement with the bowl includes the option to renew the contract for up to two additional years after 2009.
The MIAA also sends a representative to the Mineral Water Bowl. The conference's highest-finishing MIAA team not selected for the Division II playoffs will have the choice of playing in the Kanza Bowl or the Mineral Water Bowl, while the next highest-finishing non-playoff team will have the option to play in the remaining bowl.
