MARYVILLE, Mo.—The tradition of Northwest Missouri State football has been captured in print. Bearcat Century: 100 Years of Football at Northwest Missouri State is the first commemorative book that exclusively tells the story of Maryville’s college football team from its humble inception in 1908 to its notable success a century later.
The journey of Bearcat football from a small batch of farm boys to a perennial powerhouse is a story every football fan can appreciate. That rings especially true to Bearcat fans, whose football team now enjoys national prominence unparalleled at the NCAA’s Division II level.
Bearcat Century pays tribute to the university’s history of football and on into what players and fans alike consider to be the “Golden Age” of Northwest’s team: Mel Tjeerdsma’s era. During Tjeerdsma’s time as head coach, he and his staff have led the team to five national championship appearances and nine MIAA titles since 1995.
More than 150 images are included in the book, along with dozens of personal accounts from players, coaches, administrators and fans, including tales of Ryland Milner, Kirk Mathews, Jim Redd, Jim Albin, Xavier Omon and Chris Greisen, to name a few. Northwest Director of Athletic Dr. Bob Boerigter provided the book’s forward.
In cooperation with Northwest’s athletics department, a portion of the book’s proceeds will go toward Northwest’s Continued Education Fund, which helps athletes cover their tuition costs and finish their education once scholarship opportunities have expired.
Author Danny Stooksbury is a journalist with five years of experience covering sports in northwest Missouri.
Bearcat Century costs $35 for orders placed online, a $5 savings off the cover price. First editions of the book are schedule to be shipped on July 15. To order or find out more about the book, please visit www.bearcatcentury.com or call 816-248-6355.
